Rose Cottage,

Potters Hill,

Wheatcroft Nr. Matlock,

Derbyshire, DE45PH.

If you are a party of grown ups or a young family there is lots to do within a very short distance of Catered Cottage. We have given website addresses so you can find out when they are open and how they suit your needs - in no particular order....

Black Rock - www.bgs.ac.uk/foundation-web/BlackRock.html

10 mins from Catered Cottage – free car park and no entrance fee.  It is possible to climb or take a stroll around the back of this very special rock, either way you arrive at the top of it giving you the most spectacular view of the surrounding area.  It is situated on a walk that takes you to Cromford Canal from Wirksworth. This is an ideal activity for families who want to spend an hour or two and don't want to go too far from the Cottage.

Carsington Water - www.carsingtonwater.com

15 minutes from Catered Cottage – some free parking & no entrance fee. This is a credit to the tourist business in this country – a wonderful setting for walking, climbing (day courses) biking (bikes for hire), sailing (courses available) kayaking, and windsurfing, and best of all, observing the wildlife from wooden huts based around the edge of the water.  There are great facilities at the centre including restaurant & café and a presentation of the building of the reservoir – the website is well worth a visit so you can make the best of your time.

Crich Tramway Museum – www.tramway.co.uk 5 minutes from Catered Cottage – free parking with entrance fee. This step back in time is fun to experience and if you want to learn how to operate a tram this is your chance!  The perfectly preserved trams offer short trips around the site and the drivers participate in the time warp by dressing accordingly.  There are special day events so its worth checking the website (see Morris Minor Day on YouTube).

Chatsworth House - www.chatsworth.org 20 mins from Catered Cottage – the Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground is suitable for even small children. They have organised petting sessions where the children are able to have a a small animal on their lap (on a cloth so you don't have to worry about bear knees) and there great hand washing facilities. There is a restaurant and a picnic room if you want to take your own food.

ARKWRIGHT’S MILL – (5 mins from Catered Cottage) - It is said this is where the Industrial Revolution started. Richard Arkwright built the first successful water-powered cotton-spinning mill at Cromford in 1771, earning the title of "father of the factory system". He also developed Cromford into one of the first industrial villages.

CROMFORD CANAL- (10 minutes from Catered Cottage), a walk along the canal with lots of wildlife and lock, aqueduct and Pump-house.

DOVE DALE - This magnificent place of natural beauty justifies its reputation.  The Dale contains perhaps the tallest freestanding pillars in the Peak as well as the famous Thor's Cave. A walk along the river is a must do day out.

GULLIVERS KINGDOM - (10 minutes from Rose Cottage) - www.gulliversfun.co.uk - Situated on the A6 in Matlock Bath near the Pavilion, a Theme Park ideal for children under 15.

HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM - (10 minutes from Rose Cottage) - www.heightsofabraham.com 60 acres of country park with woodland/ trails, tours down two great caverns, the Prospect Tower, a multivision programme to watch, picnic area and adventure playground with trampolines. LEA GARDENS – (5 mins from Catered Cottage) - www.leagarden.co.uk from spring through autumn, the rhododendrons in this garden are ablaze with colour. Equally beautiful are the azaleas, alpines and conifers in this lovely woodland setting. On the site of a medieval quarry, the rock gardens contain a huge variety of alpines, dwarf conifers, heathers and spring bulbs. The colours, scents and natural bird life can best be appreciated on a quiet weekday. Usual opening times are approximately from 10.30 am to 9.00 pm - earlier in winter - best to check. WINGFIELD MANNOR – (5 mins from Catered Cottage) -          www.touruk.co.uk/houses/housederby_wingfield.htm - Wingfield Manor is a vast, ruined country mansion. The house was built in the mid-15th century and in 1569 Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here. Although the huge house was abandoned in the 1770s many parts have survived.

The striking late-Gothic Great Hall and the High Tower reveal how splendid Wingfield Manor must have been in its heyday. The romantic ruin makes a wonderful film location. Among the productions shot at Wingfield Manor are 'Peak Practice' and Zeffirelli's 'Jane Eyre'.

Today the house is cared for by English Heritage. Wingfield Manor Opening Times Only by pre-booked guided tour on the first Sat of month Apr-Sept only. Closed at all other times. Tel: 01246 856456/857436.
